Crape Myrtles Brighten Mary Esther

Crape Myrtles are stunning small specimen trees when used as a focal point in residential settings.

Crape Myrtle bark is an interesting characteristic of the tree and can add color and texture to a landscape design.

Voted as the "favorite" small flowering tree, Crape Myrtles consistently produce a bounty of  fringed petals that infuse the long, hot southern summer landscape with color.

In selecting Crape Myrtles for your landscape, keep in mind that there are countless cultivars to choose from.   The mature size of Crape Myrtles vary and can be grouped into three broad categories: small (less than six feet), medium (six to fifteen feet), and tall (greater than fifteen feet).  Crape Myrtles are available in a multitude of colors to coordinate with your landscape design from white to shades of pink, purple and red.

As beautiful as Crape Myrtles are, they are often victims of improper pruning practices.  In an effort to retard upward growth, they are often sheared across the top.  As a result of a pruning cut the trunk will develop an enlarged calluses, resulting in an alteration of the structural form of the tree.  By learning proper pruning practices you can assure that the natural form and health of the tree is maintained.
